Tasmania Police Support Our Photography Classes

Tasmania Police has donated eight Nikon digital SLR cameras to our Wintringham housing residents in Hobart, enabling them to take part in new photography classes designed to spark creativity and connection.

The initiative, led by Wintringham’s Community Development Worker Jordan Cripps, began when he asked a local Facebook group in Tasmania for donations of old digital cameras to help introduce regular photography classes at the organisation’s community hubs.

“I was hoping to get 10 cameras, expecting maybe 1 or 2 from friends and family, but instead, I received more than 30,” said Jordan of the overwhelming response.

The success of this community-driven effort paved the way for further community support, as Tasmania Police reached out. Constable Nicholas Monk, a Crime Scene Examiner and photographer, facilitated the donation of eight high-quality Nikon camera-and-lens sets.

Lisa Roberts, Wintringham’s Housing and Homelessness Support State Manager in Tasmania, praised the collaboration. “This donation from Tasmania Police is truly amazing. The significance of community collaboration to create opportunities for our older residents is central to our work at Wintringham, and this generous contribution helps us support our tenant communities even further,” she said.

When Constable Monk arrived to deliver the cameras, housing residents Jules, Julie, and Rose were eagerly waiting to receive the equipment. “When I met Jules, Julie, and Rose, I instantly knew we had made the right decision donating these cameras,” Constable Monk said. “Their excitement and enthusiasm were really special to see, and I’m excited to see how they progress with their photography.”

This donation highlights the power of community connection and collaboration, providing Wintringham’s residents with valuable tools to explore their creativity. For many, it offers not just a new skill, but a chance to connect with others and express themselves in a meaningful way. It’s an inspiring example of how community support can empower individuals and make a lasting impact.
