Wintringham advocates for change to Aged Care Bill

Our CEO\Founder Bryan Lipmann AM, along with General Manager Home Support Kate Rice, were invited to present to a Senate Parliamentary Committee, about the new Aged Care Bill, at Queensland’s Parliament in Brisbane, on 11 October.

Bryan and Kate emphasised the need for a more comprehensive and supportive aged care system that addresses the specific needs of people who are older, homeless, or have experienced trauma.

In his presentation, Bryan stressed that the Act should prioritise quality of life for residents, rather than solely focusing on quality of care. He highlighted the importance of social and emotional support for residents, given many have experienced trauma and isolation.

Additionally, Bryan advocated for the inclusion of people aged under 65 who have prematurely aged due to homelessness, to be eligible for aged care, as they may not be suitable for NDIS services.

Kate highlighted the important role social workers play in aged care services, and their contributions to enhancing resident wellbeing, while working collaboratively with the nursing team. She also noted that people who are homeless and/or aged under 65 are facing difficulties in accessing aged care services, despite national principles and guidelines that allow for exceptions.

To conclude their presentations, Bryan and Kate also raised concerns about the financial sustainability of aged care providers and the need for adequate funding and support, advocating for ongoing restorative care for people with acquired brain injuries, as they may require ongoing support to maintain their functional abilities.

On behalf of our clients and the whole Wintringham team, thank you Bryan and Kate for representing Wintringham’s philosophy and sharing our expertise on this national stage.
